Devlog 13 Feb 2024


Hello everyone!

Mentally, last week was a great week. Maybe it was the progress I made in the Little Pirates the week before. Maybe it was how great I felt in the gym all week. Maybe I was sick and delirious the whole time. Or maybe (probably) it was how many views I got on last weeks devlog. I don’t know what I was expecting by posting a devlog, but I wasn’t anticipating 323 views in 6 days! 

I suppose that means I’ll be trying to put one of these out every week? What do you all want to see in these things? Let me know in the comments!

Anyway, last week I said my goal was to build the last few objectives for Fjord Assault then work on getting some objectives on screen. If I had all that finished, I’d work on updating the environment a bit. Weelllllllllllllllll that’s not entirely what happened. I was actually sick all week and Helldivers 2 came out. You know I need to spend time helldiving!

Last Objectives in Fjord Assault

So this did happen. I’ve got all the buildings created, they’re damageable, and the configuration is done to get to “the end” of the game. This screenshot isn’t very impressive, but this is just what the town looks like when you sail into it. 

The goal here is to destroy town structures to open the gates. Destroy all the red structures and the west gate will come down, yellow for the central gate, and brown for the east gate. You get the idea. Once you open one of the gates, you’re free to sail into the final area, face their final line of defense and blow up the castle. Once you’re done causing chaos and mayhem, this is what the town looks like.

Polish

I’m glad I only had the one big goal for last week and I was able to accomplish it. After being sick and sidetracked from playing Helldivers 2, I wanted to try to polish up the game a little bit. One big piece of feedback that I’ve received is that can be hard to see where enemies are and where they are coming from. So I added an birds eye view to look at your surroundings

With this view, It’s so much easier to plan where enemies are, find them when there’s only one or two left in the wave. 

I also put in a little splash animation for when you miss your shots. This little addition makes the game feel so much more immersive than it was before. Strange how the little things make everything feel better huh?

This weeks effort

It feels like I’m coming into the polish stage of the game. This is the point where the game is mostly feature complete. Wave mode and Fjord Assault are in the game, they both work as intended. Now, I think its time to make a list of Quality of Life enhancements and bug fixes that I know are in the game. 

Quality of life

  • Tutorial Mode
  • Objectives on screen for Fjord Assault
  • Screen shake when taking damage

Bug Fixes

  • Put boarders Fjord Assault so the ships can’t sail on land
  • Fix enemy AI in Fjord Assault so they sail out of their spawn area and stop kissing each other
  • Play test Fjord Assault to right size difficulty
  • Compile and look for more bugs to squash
